The event is part of the festivities in honor of Nossa Senhora do Naso, and is promoted by the Municipality of Miranda do Douro and AEPGA – Association for the study and protection of donkeys, with technical guidance from the General Directorate of Food and Veterinary (DGAV), the Northern Regional Coordination and Development Commission (CCDR-N), and with the support of the Nossa Senhora do Naso Festivities Committee.

The contest aims to evaluate the evolution and current status of the Mirandese Donkey Breed at a national level, with a special focus on its territory of origin – the Mirandese Plateau. It is intended, in this way, to analyze the progress made in its genetic development, providing breeders with the opportunity to highlight the continuous effort they have been making in the field of selection, valorization, and conservation of the breed. It also aims to stimulate the breeding of donkeys that, due to their morphological and functional characteristics, as well as the conditions of welfare and quality of life in which they are kept, actively contribute to the promotion and dignification of the only donkey breed recognized in mainland Portugal – not only as a genetic heritage, but also as an ecological and cultural heritage of undeniable importance.
